Procedure of an indoor positioning project in 8 steps

1 | Specify Customer Needs

During the first project meeting, we identify the needs of your company taking into account the industry and the target group(s). We focus on the question “What specific problem do you want to solve?”

In our case study, we need to inventor assets in an office environment. Position of assets at any time, available inventory and whether the objects leave the premises or a certain area are some of the things we need to determine.
After an onsite visit, the next step we need to take is planning a solution suggestion and the mapping of the location.

2 | Solution Proposal
After presenting various options, GRECiOT and clients have a detailed discussion regarding which solution is feasible and whether it makes sense selecting it or not, including possible problems that stand or could stand in the way (technical limitations, privacy concerns, soft factors such as employee acceptance). Then, we break down total requirements into several packages and process will then progress through each package. In our example, the project goal is to have an exact inventory management of office equipment where any department should be able to view the location and status of equipment and inventories at any time. Our suggestion would consist of two components: Enabling localization of goods (furniture, office supplies, technical equipment, etc.) using a tracking system. In a web interface would be displayed both position and properties of the objects. Setting up geo-based process logics help prevent from Theft protection or loss: An alarm is triggered when an object to be tracked leaves a defined area (geofencing).

3 | Selection of Technology

Selecting the method and hardware of indoor positioning is crucial for the project. We have to mension at this point that a distinction should be made between a client-based and a server-based approach. Technology used in most cases is Bluetooth beacons, Wi-Fi and GSM tags in conjunction with GRECiOT Software depending on the intended purpose and the conditions on site.

4 | Venue Mapping

Digitalizing your building. Your building plans should in a common format (e.g. .jpg, .png, .pdf, AutoCAD). It is then that GRECiOT records the plans in the map, defines route networks and enters the important locations (POIs). Regarding that step, colors are used as per your corporate design specifications and the abstraction level of the plans is defined. Then, any additional data management could be carried out (e.g. when there are changes).

5 | Hardware Installation / Site Inspection
GRECiOT offers complete support of onsite installation making sure that any special features that should be taken into account during both installation and hardware parameterization are taken care of (e.g. shielding).

6 | Calibration of Positioning
Depending on the hardware used, calibration routes are defined in GRECiOT Software. Calibration takes place on site via the Calibration app, recording the required data for subsequent positioning. Afterwards, results of calibration are checked and optimized when necessary. This step could be performed also by your team.

7 | System Rollout
GRECiOT develops a tailor-made solution in close coordination with you while presenting you with regular preliminary results along the way. Errors are detected and corrected before release by closed user groups. Our solutions can be applied in various applications. When you try to integrate existing solutions, GRECiOT provide an SDK (Software Development Kit). Full-service solutions with a customized app that can be integrated into existing interfaces is provided.

8 | Training & Support

During rollout, GRECiOT provides background support regarding the best possible use of the tools in order for you to be able to act on your own in the future. Think it as onsite training or a web meeting, for example. In addition, we are more than happy to help with internal and external communication with employees and customers.

Whenever you intend to identify new, useful functions and plan upcoming releases, remember that our continuous analysis of customer needs and feedback will be a real help.
